Celebrating North America’s Best Restaurant

The culinary elite gathered in New York City on June 3, 2013, to honor the best restaurants in the United States over a celebratory luncheon. As a major sponsor of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, Diners Club International® was there, toasting Eleven Madison Park’s Chef Daniel Humm and Restaurateur Will Guidara at their restaurant for their ranking as the top U.S. restaurant and the best restaurant in North America by the Diners Club World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy.

This was Eleven Madison Park’s first time to be recognized as the top restaurant in North America, replacing last year’s winner, Per Se. Moving up five spots to fifth place in the overall global rankings, the restaurant is known for creating a distinctive experience, as described by our partners at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants: “Chef Humm, the 2012 winner of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef, creates modern, sophisticated French cuisine that emphasizes purity and simplicity, with seasonal flavors and ingredients.”

Invited guests included renowned chefs Mario Carbone, Laurent Gras, Jeff Zalanznick, Matthew Lightner, and Jonathan Gushue. Guests also included Academy Chair and Executive Vice President of the James Beard Foundation Mitchell Davis, Esquire magazine editor Ryan D’Augostino, and “Good Morning America” chef Karen Pincus.

The event also celebrated the other elite U.S. restaurants on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2013 list. With six restaurants, the U.S. remains a key international culinary force, matching France as the country with the highest number of establishments. The U.S. restaurants recognized include:

#5 Eleven Madison Park, New York City
#11 Per Se, New York City
#15 Alinea, Chicago
#19 Le Bernardin, New York City
#29 Daniel, New York City
#47 The French Laundry, Yountville, California

This is the first year that Diners Club has partnered with the World’s 50 Best Restaurants organization. The sponsorship is a natural fit for the deeply-rooted culinary history of Diners Club. Through the renaming of the Academy to include our name, participating in world-class galas for the winners, and ultimately bringing special restaurant experiences to clubmembers, Diners Club looks forward to a successful alliance with these global and regional awards programs, including Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.
